Only ten of us could make this venue, which tells me it’s the start of the Holiday season! But also buggies were restricted only to members due to ‘Technical issue”.
Nevertheless what an offer; Golf, Bacon butties with coffee to start and a 2-course meal at the end for only £25 for us members, can’t say fairer than that. What a scorcher! It must have been one of our hottest days in BGS at 31 deg cel by mid-afternoon. By the time we all made the 18th (uphill long par 5), we were gasping for soft drinks and ice.
Other than the obvious, with brown fairways, the course was very well maintained and fantastic greens, clearly heavily watered during the drought, many with water in the cups to wash our balls with. However, anyone straying off the fairways found very heavy rough…..’Found-It’ would have had a field day here!
We had 3 groups, starting with a 4 ball, who played a well over-due Doubles competition. Names of previous ‘losers’ were put into the ‘hat’ and the draw was re-created between Rob and Patrick vs Tony and ‘No P’, as both Neal M and Peter M couldn’t make previous venues and ‘the show had to go on’.
The game was Nip and Tuck and if I recall we were never more than a hole apart, with a little luck on both sides, but Captain Rob seemed to have a bit of Paul Daniels about him, after hitting a tree on the 1st and redirecting it back into the middle of the fairway, and bouncing off the lake and onto the other side on the 3rd - what a partner! Rob and I managed to secure the win at the end, nevertheless valiant opponents.
Groups 2 and 3, as 3 Balls included Dick Turpin, Paul Fitz, Paul Green, Phil Spencer, Dave Crocker and Peter Mayer (as a final round as a guest and off scratch!)
Scores on the day were typically between mid 20’s and 34, very consistent, with no one having the energy to ‘rip-up’ the course on such a hot day.
We all agreed, we looked forward to heading back and giving this course another chance later in the season.
